Mega Bangna brings new brands to Bangkok

Unless you're living under a rock or a saphan you've probably heard the hype about Mega Bangna. It's mega alright. And so are the amount of multi-generational families slowly milling about on a Saturday afternoon.

The mall itself just opened May 5, but Ikea has been attracting condo-dwellers and curious Thais since last year.

At the risk of turning my own condo into an Ikea showroom, I've had to ban myself from going there anymore.

Some brands are entering the Thai market via Mega Bangna: Accessorize, Cotton On, Neu Look and Payless Shoes to name a few. Nothing to get your sarong in a twist about, IMHO, but it's an addition to the Bangkok retail economy at least.

A couple brands are also introducing flagship stores a few decades/years too late (read: Body Glove and Von Dutch). Dr. Martens also have a store which might fall into this category but Docs will always come back in style.

Mega Bangna is located on Bangna-Trad Road, km 8. The highway sign is disproportionately small compared to the hype so keep a look out after you pass Bitech.

Go www.mega-bangna.com for details and driving instructions in Thai and a map in English.

Opening hours from 10am - 10pm daily.

My advice: unless you can stand the slow walking, window shopping families, wait until you have a weekday to check out this new shopping destination.

Backyard @ Terminal 21

This little boutique is tucked away on the first floor (Tokyo-themed floor) of Terminal 21, next to Sweet Drug and a few other aptly named shops.

This Thai designer started with a shop in Chatuchak (Shop 225. Soi 2, Section 4 - see card below) and recently branched out to Terminal 21. Cropped tops, screen print T's, knit tank tops and high waisted shorts are his style. Lots of cute enamel rings and gold necklaces with charms. I picked up the orange printed ombre crop top on the mannequin.

More info on Terminal 21 and Backyard's Facebook. You can order from their Facebook page and they even ship internationally!

HOB @ Terminal 21

I found an interesting bag store the other day - oversized clutches in interesting shapes, handbags with stud and chain detail, neon and paint splattered purses and wallets.

All bags are raw leather, so in light colors scrapes will show, but with time the leather wears in and softens. I, for one, like leather with that 'lived-in' feel. Bags are handmade by the Thai designer. Prices range from 1,000-2,000 Baht for the largest bags. (Ask for a discount and she will lower 100 Baht!)
